There are few destinations that capture the spirit of Africa quite like Tanzania.
Imagine waking to the sounds of the African bush, watching elephants wander across open plains and seeing lions resting beneath acacia trees. A few days later, you could be walking barefoot along a white-sand beach, looking out across the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.
This is Tanzania — a destination where safari, adventure, culture and tropical island escapes come together in one extraordinary journey.
At Travel to Africa, we believe Tanzania deserves a place on every Africa lover’s travel list. Whether you dream of witnessing the Great Migration, exploring the Ngorongoro Crater, seeing Mount Kilimanjaro or relaxing in Zanzibar, Tanzania offers an experience that’s difficult to forget.
Explore the Legendary Serengeti

For many travellers, the Serengeti is the Tanzania they have always imagined.
Vast grasslands stretch towards the horizon while giraffes, elephants, zebras, wildebeest and predators move through one of Africa’s most famous wildlife landscapes.
The Serengeti is also at the heart of the Great Migration, one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife events. Huge herds of wildebeest and zebra move through the wider Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water.
But you don’t need to travel during a particular stage of the migration to appreciate the Serengeti. The wildlife, scenery and sheer scale of the landscape make a Serengeti safari remarkable in its own right.
Discover the Ngorongoro Crater
Combine the Serengeti with the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and your Tanzania safari becomes even more memorable.
Descending from the crater rim into the Ngorongoro Crater is one of East Africa’s great safari experiences.
Grasslands, wetlands and forests provide habitats for an impressive variety of wildlife, while the surrounding highlands create some spectacular scenery.
The Serengeti and Ngorongoro work particularly well together, making them an excellent foundation for a first Tanzania safari.
Don’t Forget Tarangire
The Serengeti may receive most of the attention, but Tarangire National Park deserves a place on your itinerary too.
The park is particularly well known for its elephants and magnificent baobab trees. Its landscapes offer yet another perspective on Tanzania’s extraordinary natural diversity.
Combining different national parks also makes a safari more interesting. Every landscape has its own character, wildlife and atmosphere.
Mount Kilimanjaro: The Roof of Africa
Tanzania isn’t only about safari.
Rising 5,895 metres above sea level, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and one of the continent’s great natural landmarks.
Climbing Kilimanjaro is a serious adventure requiring preparation and a multi-day trek, but reaching the summit isn’t the only way to experience the mountain.
The surrounding region offers beautiful landscapes and opportunities to discover another side of northern Tanzania.
From Safari to Zanzibar

Then comes one of our favourite Tanzania combinations: safari and Zanzibar.
After early mornings, game drives and dusty safari roads, flying to an island in the Indian Ocean feels almost surreal.
Zanzibar offers white-sand beaches, warm tropical waters, colourful sunsets and plenty of opportunities to slow down.
Spend your days swimming, snorkelling, exploring or simply enjoying the beach.
And don’t miss Stone Town.
Its narrow streets, historic buildings, markets and distinctive architecture tell the story of Zanzibar’s long connection with Africa, Arabia, India and the wider Indian Ocean world.
For many travellers, combining several days on safari with a Zanzibar beach stay creates the perfect Tanzania holiday.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Tanzania?
There is no single answer because the best time to visit Tanzania depends on what you want to experience.
Safari conditions change with the seasons, and the Great Migration moves through different areas of the Serengeti ecosystem throughout the year.
If seeing a particular stage of the migration is important to you, plan your route and dates carefully rather than assuming the herds will always be in the same location.
Beach conditions in Zanzibar also vary seasonally, so travellers combining safari and island time should consider both parts of their journey when choosing travel dates.
How Long Should You Spend in Tanzania?
If time allows, Tanzania deserves more than a quick visit.
Around a week can provide an excellent introduction to the northern safari circuit, while adding Zanzibar gives you the opportunity to finish your journey at a more relaxed pace.
For a fuller Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday, consider approximately 10 to 14 days.
That gives you time to enjoy the experience rather than simply rushing from one destination to another.
Is Tanzania Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
Tanzania combines many of the experiences travellers dream about when they imagine Africa.
You can watch lions and elephants in the wild, cross the endless landscapes of the Serengeti, stand beneath Africa’s highest mountain, discover fascinating cultures and finish your journey beside the Indian Ocean.
Few destinations offer so much variety in a single trip.
